In today’s fast-paced world, learning is no longer confined to classrooms or local groups. Thanks to technology, we can connect with people from all corners of the globe. I continue to work with very high level professional students privately and in the classroom. One thing I have noticed throughout the years is how long these students have been sitting in classes feeling frustrated with their progression, unaware of their fossilized issues, and lack of relational experiences within their communication journeys. These observations continually inform my teaching approach.

I’ve always been fascinated with adult multilinguals and have aspired to be one myself, my focus has always been on self directed learning, and even wrote my first Masters thesis on autonomous language learning (before AI was the big thing). I knew teachers weren’t enough, classes weren’t enough, and I had needs that were specific and impossible to be met in only those capacities. So, I have always sought out ways to expedite learning, to give me a sense of agency over my learning, and to leverage all I could to create immersive experiences when I couldn’t truly be immersed.

I think as teachers, we oftentimes tend to underestimate students and their capabilities, only to get too caught up in traditional teaching approaches and our own teaching biases that prevent us from really thinking about how we can best serve our students by helping them serve themselves to understand themselves and their own needs better. For this reason, I get excited about anything that can leverage this goal. It just so happens to be technology and my classes get excited because I’m excited about it and because I show them the possibilities so they can  feel empowered. I am not blindly unaware of the potential with technology but I am not afraid of it either only because of how it has and can continue to transform language learning when combined with a relational teaching dynamic for the learner.  So, let’s explore how these communities work, why they matter, and how you can join one to enhance your skills and confidence.
